>> THE STORY :: THE DOCUMENTED HISTORY, ON THE WIRE

01
08.1998
The oldest song on the album — probably.
Recorded August 1998 at Record Plant, Los Angeles — the earliest-recorded song to make the final tracklist. Written and produced by Dr. Freeze (Elliot Straite), with additional touches by Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins. The Invincible liner notes carry no per-track studio line for this one — the date and location trace only to the Michael Jackson Wiki (Fandom), so this is downgraded from documented to fan-sourced pending a firmer citation.

02.1999
Mottola calls it a guaranteed hit.
Jackson presented it to Sony executives in February 1999 at a Marvin's Room listening session. Tommy Mottola reportedly responded that if the album went in this direction, “it'd be a guaranteed hit.” The session itself is now on-record via a named attendee (below); the exact Mottola quote still traces only to a reported account.

> Cory Rooney (then-SVP, Sony Music, and present at the session), on-record: “Michael invited us to the studio… myself, Tommy Mottola, John Doelp, Polly Anthony, and David Glew –… all the top Sony Music and Epic Records people.”

PLANNED
A single and a video were planned. Neither happened.
A single release and music video were both on the plan; neither materialized — attributed to the album's promotional collapse. The whole pattern of shelved rollouts is Phase III's file.

FREEZE
One of three Freeze songs to reach the sessions.
Freeze joined the Invincible sessions in 1998 through manager John McClain. This was one of three Freeze productions to reach the sessions — the other two, “Blue Gangsta” and “A Place With No Name,” were left off Invincible and stayed in the vault exactly 13 years before surfacing on Xscape (2014) .

> FREEZE, on Jackson at the mic: “When he came into the studio to record… he stood before the microphone and set fire to the song. Flowers and trees grew in the song.”

The Mottola “guaranteed hit” quote is treated as settled, but lacks a pinned exact citation. Flagged for verification before full documented tier.
