01
10.15.97
The biggest tour of the decade ends. {{ labelN01 }}
The HIStory World Tour closes — the highest-grossing solo tour of the 1990s. By every external measure, he is at the summit. The full standing is EXH-A, docked below.

THE BRIEF ......... "BEST + LAST"
at the peak of his reach, ten years since an all-original record — and he tells a newspaper it may be his last. that gap is the pressure this whole album is made under.
02
10.20.97
Five days later, he's back in a studio. {{ labelN02 }}
In Brad Buxer's home studio, “Bio” is the first song — tour to studio in under a week. (Song file: Vault #7.)
03

Who he was at that moment. {{ labelN03 }}
Married Debbie Rowe in a Sydney hotel room mid-tour; Prince Michael born February 1997, Paris on the way; his first solo concert on the African continent had happened on this tour; his friend Princess Diana had recently died. A life turning over as fast as the career.

The gap years weren't idle. {{ labelN04 }}
Blood on the Dance Floor (the best-selling remix album in history); “Ghosts” (a 39-minute film with Stephen King and Stan Winston, ~$15M, screened at Cannes); the 1999 MJ & Friends charity concerts — including the Munich stage-bridge collapse mid-performance.
05
c.1997
The seeds may be older than the “day five” story. {{ labelN05 }}
The Blood on the Dance Floor New York sessions already had Teddy Riley's crew pushing Jackson toward modern R&B. An account from Sprague “Doogie” Williams — an engineer on Riley's team, name confirmed via Halftime Chat's own series metadata —: “The butterflies, the Heaven Can Waits, the Break of Dawns… we were trying to go there.” It pushes the real creative origin earlier than Oct 1997. The same interview series hints at sessions predating even 1997 (“before 1993 allegations put a halt to the project”), but that thread was checked and appears exhausted — nothing further surfaced.
06
EARLY
First attempts, and a stray line. {{ labelN06 }}
“Seeing Voices,” with a Ray Charles choir arrangement, is one of the very first tracks attempted (Vault #8). And a line worth keeping, though the source doesn't cleanly name a speaker: “I'm sick and tired of these primitive drum machines.” — presumed Jackson, flagged until attribution is confirmed. ⚠︎ (fuller sourcing thread on Research.)

◆ TURN
HE NAMES THE CONTRADICTION HIMSELF. {{ labelN08 }}
To London's Daily Mirror, Jackson calls the record “the best thing I've ever done” — and, in the same breath, “my last album.” The two verdicts, laid against each other, are EXH-B below.

INTERCEPT ┤ N-08 — THE DAILY MIRROR, APRIL 1999
> “I have an album coming out for the millennium, which I'm half way through. It's going to be the best thing I've ever done. I'm putting my heart and soul into it… because I'm not sure if I'm gonna do another one after this. This will be my last album.”

CH. 2 :: THE CHESS BOARD
09
1985
The move that starts the real game: he buys the Beatles. {{ labelN09 }}
On McCartney's own advice about owning publishing, Jackson buys ATV — ~4,000 songs, the Lennon-McCartney catalog among them — for ~$41.5M net. The whole 16-year escalation is EXH-C, docked below.

EXH-C ┤ N-09 — THE BOARD :: WHAT IS AT STAKE ▤ documented throughout
YEAR MOVE STAKE
1985 buys ATV (the Beatles, ~4,000 songs) ~$41.5M net — best asset buy in music
1991 six-album Sony recording contract ~$20M penalty/album; Invincible = the last owed
1995 merges ATV into Sony/ATV ~$500M co., MJ keeps 50% — label + asset, one company
2001 $200M loan vs. the Sony/ATV stake guaranteed by Sony — default → Sony takes his half
every move in the whole story happens on this board — and it's the setup for the entire Phase III war.
10
91 / 95
The label and the crown asset become one company. {{ labelN10 }}
1991: a six-album Sony deal, ~$20M penalty per undelivered album — Invincible is the last one owed. 1995: he merges ATV into Sony/ATV and keeps 50%. The company that releases his records now co-owns his most valuable possession. The conflict is built in years before anyone fights.
11
1991
The contract that this album has to satisfy. {{ labelN11 }}
A six-album minimum deal with Sony, reportedly carrying a ~$20M penalty per undelivered album. Invincible is the last studio album required under it — not just his comeback record, but the final line item on a decade-old obligation. See EXH-C for where this sits on the board.
12
2001
◆ THE GUN
THE STAKE BECOMES COLLATERAL. {{ labelN12 }}
By 2001 a $200M Bank of America loan sits against the Sony/ATV stake — guaranteed by Sony. If Jackson defaults, Sony can take his half. The gun is on the mantel before the album is even finished; Phase III is when it goes off.
13
2001
His own lawyer sizes up the prize — a quote worth a caveat. ⚠︎ {{ labelN13 }}
Jackson's attorney John Branca, widely quoted as saying: “$41M net investment. Half of a company now worth upward of $2 billion.” The line is repeated often, but the exact interview it traces to hasn't been pinned down — filed as a widely-repeated framing, not a confirmed direct citation. (Branca's own page carries a separately-sourced, later version of this same figure, plus his fuller story and firing.) Jackson also held MiJac, covering every song he personally wrote.

ONE PHONE CALL STARTS THE MAKING. {{ labelN14 }}
Before the sessions can properly begin, Carole Bayer Sager — who co-wrote with Jackson back on Off the Wall — makes a call. What follows is Phase II: The Making.
