2000–01
Jerkins delivers it early — and it becomes the lead.
Produced by Rodney Jerkins, recorded at Criteria Recording Studios in October 1999 — one of only five tracks (this one, “Privacy,” “Break of Dawn,” “Speechless,” “Cry”) dating to an earlier period of production, with most of the album written in its final year. Sony picks it as the album's lead single — over “Unbreakable,” which Jackson had wanted to lead. The Paul Hunter short film shoots in Los Angeles, Aug 13–21, 2001.

INTERCEPT ┤ N-01 — SINGING IN HIS EAR
> during the Miami sessions, LaShawn Daniels sang the melody directly into Jackson's ear to demonstrate it. Jackson put a hand on his shoulder.
> DANIELS: “Mike, I appreciate you being so cool… but you can't be this cool with me —… I can't concentrate because I'm singing to Michael Jackson.” Jackson laughed.
> the same beat, nearly word-for-word, recurs in a separate session with another vocalist — a genuine pattern in how Jackson worked standing next to a singer.

◆ TURN
THE ROLLOUT STARTS HERE — AND STOPS HERE.
Per Jerkins — corroborated across three interviews — the intended plan ran “You Rock My World” → “Butterflies” → “Unbreakable” (short film) → “Threatened” (short film) → “Break of Dawn.” It collapsed immediately after this single, as the Sony conflict escalated. The full plan is laid out in Butterflies' Exhibit A; the campaign's anatomy is Phase III. This is the hinge.

13.5 MIN
A short film with Brando — and a budget nobody will confirm. ⚠︎
The Paul Hunter film runs 13.5 minutes and features Chris Tucker, Marlon Brando and Michael Madsen — a heist-club narrative around the song. The widely-cited $6 million price tag circulates through fan communities but was never officially confirmed; it is on this page tagged as disputed, and the figure itself lives in the readout above, not here.

2026
Twenty-four years on, it charts again.
A genuine, dated re-entry: the song reappears on Billboard and Official Charts data across 2026, more than two decades after its original run — figures live in the readout above. Part of a broader wave of 2026 posthumous catalog re-engagement documented across Jackson's back catalog, not unique to this track.
