Track 01 opens with a ghost on the mic. ■Produced by ⌜Rodney Jerkins, written with ⌜LaShawn Daniels and Fred Jerkins III. The album opens on a rap verse by ⌜The Notorious B.I.G. — built from a Biggie acapella Jerkins sourced from Shaquille O'Neal's “You Can't Stop the Reign” (itself built on Biggie's own “Unbelievable”), timed and locked into the track four years after Biggie's death.

Jackson wants it as the lead. The label picks another. ▤Jackson wanted “Unbreakable” to be the album's lead single. Sony chose “ ♪You Rock My World” instead. No account of Jackson's side of that disagreement survives — only Jerkins' telling. It stays an open question.

HE PAYS TO FILM IT HIMSELF. THE LABEL KILLS IT ANYWAY. ▤Jackson designed the short film himself: held off a high-rise by thugs, dropped, his body reassembling mid-fall into fire, dancing scaffold to scaffold — visual ideas years ahead of the tech. Sony rejected the concept as too violent. Jackson funded a shoot himself, with ⌜Brett Ratner directing — then Sony cancelled all promotion around the track. Not a greenlight declined; a finished thing killed. The whole pattern is Phase III's file.

It opens what fans call the “Darkchild Trilogy.” ★
Critics and fans have called the three opening Jerkins tracks — “Unbreakable,” “ ♪Heartbreaker,” “ ♪Invincible” — the “Darkchild Trilogy”: one industrial, syncopated block deliberately fronting the record. That name is fan-and-critic shorthand, not a statement anyone on the credits made.
